Letter: Even out the tax breaks

The Columbian
Published: May 20, 2011, 12:00am

Dalton Raatz’s May 14 letter, “Both states have tax advantage,” is way off base. Raatz states that people from Washington go to Oregon to purchase cigarettes, groceries and much more tax free. Is Raatz aware that groceries are not taxed in Washington?

How many Oregonians are going to drive all the way over here to shop when they pass many places in Oregon on the south side of the Columbia River by I-5 and I-205.

How much of a tax break do the thousands of Washingtonians who work in Oregon get on income tax?

Do we get a tax break when we go to California, Nevada or Idaho? No we don’t.

Let’s get the sales-tax exemption for out-of-state shoppers repealed.
