KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Security officials say militants have attacked a naval aviation base in the southern city of Karachi.

The officials say navy commandos entered the base soon after the attack late Sunday and are trading fire with the militants. The militants have also thrown grenades at the commandos, and at least one airplane is on fire.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Police initially said the attack occurred at an air force base that is adjacent to the naval aviation base.

Ambulance driver Mohammed Ilyaz said at least two injured people have been transferred to the hospital.

But authorities are holding back many of the ambulances because of the firing taking place.
