VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Two Vancouver high schools have launched a “Math in Green Construction” course in which dozens students are constructing twin 504-square foot cottages, one on each campus.
The students earn one credit of required state math curriculum and one elective credit. It’s a hands-on way for students to apply real-life mathematics, to boost teamwork and self-confidence and to get outdoors.
Instructors say the students are having so much fun, they’re motivated to complete their work in other classes to stay eligible for the project.
Students in the year-long class are learning algebra, geometry and probability. But they’re also learning teamwork and discipline and have improved their exam scores.
