Letter: Remember full definition of rights

The Columbian
Published: May 22, 2011, 12:00am

The very rich supporters of Republican politicians, all forms of media and their ideologues, are destroying the hard-won rights of the working men and women of this nation. Those hard-won rights were accurately, beautifully written by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Americans need to be reminded of what those rights are and honor the lives of the men and women who fought and died right here at home to achieve them.

They are:

The right to a useful and enumerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation.

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation.

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living.

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad.

The right of every family to a decent home.

The right to medical care and opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health.

The right to adequate protection from economic fears of old age, illness, accident and unemployment.

The right to a good education.

See how far we have fallen.
