INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Long shot Logical Single held off favorite Lady Railrider by a half-length Sunday to win the $70,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Chantal Sutherland, Logical Single sat second behind pacesetter Jax El in the field of seven fillies and mares for most of the race, then took the lead at the top of the stretch and never yielded, covering a mile on turf in 1:34.56.

Lady Railrider’s jockey Joe Talamo claimed foul against Logical Single and Sutherland for what he said was stretch-run interference, but the stewards let the results stand.

The winner paid $16.60, $7.40 and $4.80. Lady Railrider paid $4 and $3. Jax El faded to third and returned $4.40.

A 4-year-old filly bred in California and trained by Dean Pedersen, Logical Single won for the first time in three tries on turf and has won five times in 12 starts overall. She has earned a total of $198,652.
