Letter: Gaining trust in our youth

A lot of times the young people in our area get some pretty bad press. Quite a bit of the time it’s well deserved. Fort Vancouver High School gets more than its fair share of this. I would like to relate an experience I had at a local Vancouver park. I dropped off one of my children at the park for a barbecue with friends. Being dubious of the real intensions, I parked my car down the street and walked back to see what was really up. To my surprise and chagrin, what I saw made me very proud.

At least 50 young adults from FVHS had a barbecue, played Frisbee, hackey sack, and old-fashioned fun. They were polite to the people around them, and a little before dusk they cleaned up and departed. There were kids of all ethnicities, no fights, and from what I could hear, very little bad language.

Congratulations FVHS parents and teachers. Or maybe, our kids actually do get it, and we need to relax and trust in them more than we do. I know I will be doing a little evaluation of my trust issues.
