Letter: Protect programs for elderly

The Republicans want to abolish Medicare. Just switch Medicare to private insurers, they say, and we’ll subsidize it. Has anyone noticed that despite medical insurance claims being down and insurer profits at record highs, the insurance companies are demanding vast increases in rates. “Just in case” claims go up. We can’t leave seniors to the mercy of the private insurance companies and make them pay even more for health care.

But what about spending caps. Spending caps would actually trigger massive cuts to Medicare within a few years. Spending caps are nothing more than the death of health care for ourselves and our children. Programs that protect our parents and grandparents should not be on the chopping block.
