Letter: Military service is honorable act

Military service is honorable act

Reading the May 17 letter, “Subject low-scoring students to draft,” I’m deeply disappointed by Morgan Divine’s recommendation “to subject students with a poor GPA to a military draft” as a way to motivate those with low GPAs to improve their grades. We already have sufficient motivation for students to do better … better earning potential, improved lifestyle, greater self-satisfaction, admission to better colleges. And if students won’t or can’t do better, I do not think scaring them with “more severe methods of reinforcement” will “result in a better-educated society, less crime, and a more balanced budget.”

That letter’s point of view strongly insinuates that military service is a punishment awaiting those who can’t make the grade. Our nation’s military is made up of the brightest, most dedicated and selfless people this country has seen. Threatening students with involuntary service is highly inappropriate and insulting to every person who wears or wore the uniform.
