National Weather Service issues flood watch for Columbia River
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A flood warning remains in place for the Columbia River in the Portland metro area, with minor flooding expected in some lowland areas.
The National Weather Service said the river was just below flood stage early Wednesday morning but was expected to gradually rise above the 16-foot flood stage by Wednesday evening and remain slightly above for the rest of the week.
Minor flooding is expected along the banks of the Columbia in Vancouver, Wash., and on Sauvie Island north of Portland and some camping areas, such as Government Island.
The Columbian newspaper in Vancouver reports the number bridge lifts on Interstate 5 between Vancouver and Portland have also been rising with river levels -- 37 lifts between May 15 and Tuesday to accommodate reduced clearance for maritime traffic.
