Wash. soldier killed in Iraq

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Defense Department says a 37-year-old soldier from Medical Lake, Wash., has died of wounds he received when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

The military said Sergeant First Class Clifford E. Beattie died Sunday in Iraq.

A 1992 graduate of Medical Lake High School, he joined the Army soon after high school.

Beattie was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division, based in Fort Riley, Kan.

KXLY says Beattie was married and has two children who live in Yelm, Wash.
