SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Huge releases of water from dams on the bloated Columbia River are causing a massive fish kill at a fish farm south of Grand Coulee Dam.
The operators of Pacific Aquaculture Inc. say they are losing 100,000 fish a day because the huge releases of water are oversaturating the river with gases that are toxic to the fish.
They have sent a letter to the Northwest congressional delegation, asking that the releases from the dams be stopped immediately.
But the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission said a big melting snowpack, plus heavy rains all spring, make it impossible for the many dams to store all the water flowing through the river system.
