Letter: Accept Middle East as a lost cause

The Columbian
Published: May 26, 2011, 5:00pm

While listening to our president lay out our Middle East policy, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him as he outlined a plan he inherited for the U.S. to be the world’s policeman, and the designated purveyor of this democracy thing to everyone, whether it’s good for them or not.

Surely, deep down in his heart he must believe as a lot of us do that the Middle East is a lost cause. Those people have been fighting for thousands of years, and nothing that we do now can do anything but make it worse. It would be better for everyone if we got out now with all our boots, boats and airplanes, and stop all aid to the region.

Who knows, this might even reduce our deficit.
