Letter: Good people need help, too

Many Americans believe that most individuals on welfare programs, i.e. food stamp programs and federal and state housing programs, are taking advantage of being on the programs. That is wrong.

I think Americans not on the programs are bitter that they do not receive the benefits of said programs and claim that alcohol and drug abuse are more prevalent in welfare recipients.

Studies have shown that people on welfare do not have a significantly higher rate of alcohol or drug abuse than those not on welfare. In a study by Bridget F. Grant analyzing the National Longitudinal Epidemiological Survey of 1992, it showed that there was not a significantly higher population of alcohol/drug abuse for people on welfare programs. The study showed the data were nearly the same for individuals on welfare and those who are not on welfare.

The people who oppose these programs are wrong for assuming that welfare recipients abuse their welfare benefits.

Abuse is controlled by the rules placed on the conditions to receive these programs’ benefits.
