SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon Democrat is trying to revive a stalled bill that would ban a potentially harmful chemical from children’s food and drink containers.

Democratic state Rep. Ben Cannon of Portland hopes a rarely used procedural maneuver could bring a vote of the full House on a bill targeting bisphenol-A, commonly known as BPA.

Supporters of a ban argue the chemical disrupts hormones in young children, sometimes causing the early onset of puberty and severe health problems later in life. BPA-free containers are available in stores, but supporters of the ban say some parents don’t know the chemical is potentially harmful.

Opponents argue that there’s no conclusive proof that small amounts of BPA are harmful.

Cannon needs support from a majority of House members to call a floor vote.
