MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The U.S. ambassador to Manila says Osama bin Laden’s death should serve as a warning to all terrorists that they will be brought to justice in the relentless campaign against violent extremism.
Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. paid tribute Sunday to Americans and Filipinos who have perished in the battle against terrorism in a Memorial Day speech at the American cemetery in the Philippine capital.
U.S. troops have been providing training, weapons and intelligence to Filipino soldiers battling the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf extremist group since 2002. At least four American military personnel and civilians have been killed by the militants in the country’s south in the last 10 years.
Washington has listed the Abu Sayyaf as a terrorist group.
