CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — The Calgary Flames have traded young defenseman Tim Erixon and a fifth-round pick in this month’s draft to the New York Rangers for junior forward Roman Horak and two second-round draft choices.

The Flames made the trade Wednesday as they faced a deadline to sign the 20-year-old Erixon, Calgary’s first-round choice in 2009, or lose him. Erixon wouldn’t sign the standard three-year rookie contract and, according to Calgary general manager Jay Feaster, was willing to go back into the draft.

The Rangers said they agreed to an entry-level deal with Erixon, the son of former New York forward Jan Erixon. The maximum annual salary a 2009 draft pick can make is $900,000, plus bonuses.

Horak, a fifth-round pick by the Rangers in 2009, played the past two seasons in the Western Hockey League.
