SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A Republican state lawmaker is challenging a proposed $2 million campaign to promote carpooling in Oregon.
The Oregonian reports that freshman state Rep. Mike McLane of Powell Butte says that money could be better spent on transportation for seniors and people with disabilities.
The newspaper says the 46-year-old McLane is taking on some powerful lobbyists whose clients contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign money to state lawmakers last year.
The “Drive Less, Save More” campaign was officially launched in February 2006 by the Wilsonville company Pac/West, founded by Paul Phillips, a former lawmaker and assistant to Republican Gov. Vic Atiyeh.
