MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Heavy-lift helicopter company Erickson Air-Crane is laying off 117 workers from its plant in Central Point.

The Mail Tribune (http://bit.ly/sIXjLq ) reported Thursday that CEO Udo Rieder issued a statement saying the company had to cut costs in reaction to the uncertain global economic outlook.

The company builds specialty heavy-lift helicopters and operates a fleet of them around the world, mostly doing logging and firefighting.

General counsel and secretary Ed Rizzuti says the company’s commercial and government customers are feeling pressure to cut costs.

The company moved its headquarters to Portland in 2009 and last year announced plans for a $75 million stock offering that has not occurred. Last January it announced the sale of five helicopters to a Chinese company, but that deal has yet to go through.
