Kavita Battan scored the game’s only goal and the Hockinson defense did the rest as the Hawks beat Mark Morris 1-0 Saturday to clinch their sixth consecutive trip to the Class 2A state playoffs. “The key was our defense, led by Kaity Kuntz, did a great job of getting a second straight shutout in the playoffs,” Hockinson coach Vic Oenning said. “That’s what you need. It’s up to your offense to get the ball into the net. The defense put us in position to win both games.”

OLYMPIA — Washington state is finishing its latest budget cycle with a deficit for the first time in modern recordkeeping. State accountants are finalizing the numbers, and they now expect that the two-year budget that ended June 30 will officially close about $90 million in the red. Records released to The Associated Press under state public records laws show it is something that hasn’t happened in any biennium dating back at least a quarter of a century, when accounting processes changed.

The Evergreen High School Theatre Department presents “Night of the Living Dead,” based on the film by George Romero. The story follows a group being attacked by zombies while trapped in a rural farmhouse. This production features a deaf student in the role of a news anchor who will deliver her lines in American Sign Language. The Saturday show will be entirely ASL interpreted. Parental guidance suggested for children younger than 12. When: 7 p.m. Saturday.

Whipple Creek trails whipped into shape; ODOT gets lost on path to common sense

Cheers: To horse owners’ groups and other volunteers who have made substantial improvements to Whipple Creek Regional Park. The 300-acre park, west of the Clark County Fairgrounds, is a frequented by horse riders, mountain bikers, trail runners and anyone who just enjoys a forest outing. The park’s funding dried up even as the trails got soggier, with seasonal muck strong enough to injure a horse or a human. That’s when the volunteers stepped in to repair and resurface the worst spots. With enthusiastic volunteers, more plans will come to fruition.

A Vancouver man has been in the Coos County, Ore., Jail since Oct. 22 after being arrested there on suspicion of first-degree rape, unlawful penetration and sexual abuse, police say. Cody James Dornbirer, 21, was arrested after police were called to student housing at Southwestern Oregon Community College, where he is a student, according to a bulletin from the Coos Bay Police Department. Police said they interviewed the alleged victim, Dornbirer and “numerous” other students, and conducted a search warrant at the scene of the alleged assault.

Vehicle prowls reported in Ridgefield

The Ridgefield Police Department is investigating a series of vehicle prowls that happened several nights this week. The first series of reported call prowls came in Wednesday morning, said Ridgefield Police Chief Carrie Greene. Around eight people reported having items including GPS units, XM radios and loose change taken from their cars, she said.
