Medford backs excluding lawbreakers from parks

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — The Medford City Council has changed city code to exclude people from city property if they’re caught breaking the law there.

The change gives police authority to bar people up to 180 days.

The Mail Tribune (http://bit.ly/vj8aOJ) reports exclusions apply only to property where the crime was committed.

Violators who return can be cited for trespassing. Councilman Bob Strosser says the new law will make parks and other public areas safer for families.

Some believe the law overreaches.

Hawthorne Park patron John Sheppard says the changes will create more friction between police and the homeless.

Ashland resident Shane Smith says misdemeanors such as defacement of public property are not grounds for exclusion.
