Congress weighs fate of Coast Guard icebreakers

SEATTLE (AP) — The fate of two aging Coast Guard icebreakers based in Seattle is up to Congress.

The Coast Guard wants to mothball the Polar Sea and scavenge its parts for the sister Polar Star.

The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/s2sYJR ) Sen. Maria Cantwell opposes that move and is co-sponsoring an amendment to save the Polar Sea.

Meanwhile, legislation in the House would mothball the Polar Sea in six months and decommission the Polar Star in three years.

That would leave the United States with only one icebreaker, the Healy, at a time when melting ice is opening the Arctic to more shipping and exploration.
