ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch says his dad taught him the value of hard work.

Vanden Bosch wheeled concrete and hauled blocks for the family business — a construction company in Larchwood, Iowa — on Saturday mornings after playing high school football the previous night.

Back then and now, he plays with a relentless abandon on each snap.

Vanden Bosch, though, didn’t practice Wednesday. He’s following a program set up after he had neck surgery in December to help him be at his best on Sundays.

It has worked well.

Vanden Bosch has five sacks, three forced fumbles and a recovered fumble. Since Arizona drafted him in 2001, he was at his best for Tennessee in 2005 and 2007 when he had 12-plus sacks each season.
