Occupy movement debates how to police its fringe

NEW YORK (AP) — Occupy Wall Street says it speaks for just about everyone. That has made it difficult for the movement against economic inequality to speak out against unwanted elements pushing different causes.

Experts say the leaderless movement may further muddle its message by not coming down harder on its fringe.

Bill Dobbs is Occupy Wall Street’s New York press liaison. He says allowing a diverse set of protesters has revived grassroots activism.

Signs in New York’s Zuccotti Park oppose hydraulic fracturing, the Chinese Communist party and the war.

In Washington, an antiwar movement protesting at a separate park from the Occupy movement there tried to share its domain name.

And in Portland, Ore., some protesters asked to limit people at the encampment to those who participate in meetings. The proposal was rejected.
