Oxana Slivenko wins gold at weightlifting worlds

PARIS (AP) — Oxana Slivenko of Russia won gold in the women’s 69-kilogram division at the weightlifting world championships on Wednesday.

The 2006 and ’07 world champion lifted 118 kilos in the snatch and 148 in the clean and jerk for a 266 total.

Xiang Yan-mei of China attempted to hoist 151 kilos on her last attempt in the clean and jerk for a combined 267, but she failed and had to settle for silver. She lifted 116 in the snatch and 148 in the clean and jerk for a 266 total.

Tatiana Matveeva of Russia finished a distant third with a combined 253.

The competition ends Sunday.
