Marshall surges past Alabama State 67-49

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Robert Goff and DeAndre Kane scored 13 points apiece to lead Marshall to a 67-49 victory over Alabama State on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Goff, a freshman forward, scored 10 of his points in the second half, when the Thundering Herd led by as many as 20 points after leading 34-24 at halftime.

Kane, a senior guard who averaged 15.1 points per game last season, scored nine of his points in the first half and also finished with five assists.

After the Hornets took an 11-7 lead with 6:26 gone in the game, Marshall took control with a 17-0 run over the next 6:44.

Ivory White and Kenderek Washington scored 11 points apiece to lead Alabama State, the Southwestern Athletic Conference champion last season.

Marshall outshot Alabama State 43.6 percent (24 for 55) to 37 percent (17 of 46) and out-rebounded the Hornets 40-27.
