NASCAR drivers to take on new-look PIR in Chase

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Phoenix International Raceway should have been a comfortable place for the penultimate race in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Instead, it’ll be a bit of a guessing game after the track was resurfaced and reconfigured between its spring and fall races.

Drivers had become familiar with the cracks and quirks at PIR’s mile oval since the track became a part of NASCAR’s rotation in 1988.

This weekend, they’ll have to spend a little more time trying to figure out setups after the track was resurfaced for the first time in 20 years and slight changes were made to the banking and dogleg.

NASCAR held a two-day test at PIR in October and drivers will get four hours of practice before qualifying on Saturday.
