SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Kevin Foster scored 17 points and led a 3-point shooting barrage by Santa Clara in an 80-48 season-opening victory against UC Merced on Friday night.

Foster had five of the Broncos’ 14 baskets from behind the arc, their most since making 15 against Gonzaga on March 5, 2001. Foster led the nation with 140 3-pointers last season.

Evan Roquemore (16 points) and Brandon Clark (12) had four 3-pointers each.

Anthony Chambers and Aki Shephard had 12 points apiece for UC Merced, a NAIA school that classified the game as an exhibition. The Bobcats’ record remains 0-1.

The Broncos scored the game’s first 13 points and led 34-1 after Denzel Johnson’s layup with 8:06 remaining in the first half. UC Merced shot just 5 for 32 (15.6 percent) en route to a 45-17 deficit at halftime and was 15 of 59 (25.4 percent) from the floor for the game.
