PARIS (AP) — Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstan won the gold medal in the men’s 94-kilogram division at the world weightlifting championships on Saturday.
Ilyin clinched the title when Artem Ivanov of Ukraine failed on his last attempt in the clean and jerk for a total of 413 kilos that would have beaten the world record of 412 set by Akakios Kakhiasvilis of Greece in 1999.
Olympic champion Ilyin lifted 181 kilos in the snatch and 226 in the clean and jerk for a combined 407.
Ivanov had to settle for silver for the second straight year despite having a 407 aggregate, as well.
