San Diego State rips Southern Utah 70-37

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Chase Tapley scored 16 points and guided San Diego State to a huge first-half lead in a 70-37 rout of Southern Utah on Saturday in the Basketball Travelers Classic.

Tapley led the onslaught with 13 points as San Diego State (2-0) took a 20-3 lead. The Aztecs led 41-15 at halftime.

Southern Utah (1-1) scored the first basket of the game, then missed seven consecutive shots while committing eight turnovers.

Ray Jones Jr. scored nine points for the Thunderbirds, who shot 30.2 percent (13 of 43), committed 26 turnovers and were outrebounded 41-25.

Jamaal Franklin scored 13 points, LaBradford Franklin 12 and DeShawn Stephens 11 for San Diego State. Franklin played in his first game after being on indefinite suspension to start the season.
