FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Kurt Hess was 20 of 24 passing and Jamaine Cook rushed for 147 yards as Youngstown State handed North Dakota State its first loss of the season, 27-24, on Saturday.
Hess threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for a score for the Penguins (6-4, 4-3 Missouri Valley). His 10-yard pass to Cook put Youngstown State ahead 24-21 in the third quarter.
North Dakota State (9-1, 6-1) tied it with a 27-yard field goal on its next possession before David Brown booted what proved to be the game-winner from 30 yards out with 2:49 left in the third period.
The Penguins outgained the favored Bison, 451-293.
Sam Ojuri rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns for North Dakota State, while DJ McNorton had 77 yards and a TD. Brock Jensen was 11 of 22 for 133 yards passing.
