OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running backs coach Ron Brown has won fans for his willingness to espouse his religious beliefs, while critics say he wrongly used his platform as an assistant at a major public institution to proselytize.

Brown is the man who delivered the message to Penn State and Nebraska players, coaches and staff during a midfield gathering before kickoff in State College, Pa., Saturday. He remembered the alleged child sex-abuse victims of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Brown said he felt God’s presence in the stadium and that Jesus Christ wants to heal the victims and the PSU community.

Brown has been targeted by the ACLU for mixing his religious views into his anti-drug and -alcohol talks. Critics called for Brown’s firing in 1999 after he condemned homosexuality.
