Navy defeats Penn State-Altoona 88-54

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — J.J. Avila didn’t miss a shot in scoring 14 points, and helped lead Navy over Penn State-Altoona 88-54 on Sunday.

Avila was 6-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, as Navy shot 56.5 percent for the game (35 of 62).

The Midshipmen (2-0) dominated the Division III Cougars inside, outscoring them 52-8 in the paint, and winning the battle of the boards 41-23.

Out of the 16 players that played for Navy, 14 scored with Thurgood Wynn, Carlton Smith and Brandon Venturini tallying 10 points each.

The Midshipmen were 20 of 31 in the first half, while holding the Cougars to 28.6 percent shooting (6 of 21) en route to a 49-21 lead at halftime.

Penn State-Altoona was led by Eric Sarra with 18 points. Jonathan Ross added 11 points for the Cougars, who turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 33 points by Navy.
