KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Pat Summitt is the 2011 recipient of the Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award.
U.S. Sports Academy director of communications Duwayne Escobedo presented Summitt with the award before the third-ranked Lady Volunteers’ season opener against Pepperdine on Sunday.
The 59-year-old Summitt revealed in August that she had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. She says she disclosed her diagnosis in hopes of helping others understand they could still live their lives after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
The Courage Award is presented annually in honor of an individual who demonstrates courageous action in overcoming adversity to excel in sport.
