Gaven signs multi-year deal with Crew

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Crew have signed veteran midfielder Eddie Gaven to a multi-year contract extension.

The 25-year-old Gaven is coming off his ninth MLS season overall, and sixth with the Crew. He missed eight games with an ankle injury in 2011, scoring five goals with an assist in 26 games.

A native of Hamilton, N.J., Gaven joined the Crew via a trade with New York on March 28, 2006. He has appeared in 165 matches with 26 goals and 19 assists. He was the club’s MVP in 2010 when he had three goals and five assists in 28 games.

Gaven scored the game-winning goal in the Eastern Conference final against Chicago in 2008, and assisting on another as the Crew won the MLS Cup.
