Letter: Reform can bring positive change

I am very hopeful about the Occupy movement. Many people have come together because the many injustices in our society seem to be quickly escalating into greater problems. They have come with a variety of issues and are beginning to find their voice to address the systemic problems with symptoms that adversely affect nearly everyone. The solutions are things that we as individuals cannot do, but which our legislators and government can do, but will only do when pressured.

Few can reform themselves except in times of crisis — whether it be schools, businesses, individuals, or governments. We need to create the crisis that motivates changes in the tax laws, the tariff laws, health insurance laws, election laws — all of the things that contribute to the extreme inequities. They will happen when the will of the people can no longer be ignored.

I challenge each of us to occupy, to join the movement for change. Each of us has to find our own way to be part of Occupy, but don’t let this moment, this movement, pass by without doing something. There’s something powerful and possible going on here, and each of us has a place in it.
