BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Joe Frazier’s family and friends are saying goodbye to the former heavyweight champion at two memorial services near his hometown in South Carolina.

Frazier is being remembered first with a service Wednesday morning at Bethesda Christian Fellowship Temple on St. Helena Island. A public memorial service will follow at noon in a waterfront park in Beaufort, in the county where he grew up.

Frazier may forever be linked with Philadelphia, but he never forgot his roots in South Carolina. Friends say he built his strength stacking crates at the Coca-Cola plant and practiced his devastating left hook on bags stuffed with rags, corncobs and moss on the family’s 10 acres of land.

Frazier died earlier this month from liver cancer. He was 67.
