MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have finalized a two-year contract with veteran middle infielder Jamey Carroll that includes a mutual option for the 2014 season.

The deal was announced Wednesday, bringing the 37-year-old career .278 hitter to Minnesota. This is the latest attempt by the Twins to stabilize their shortstop situation, after signing Japanese star Tsuyoshi Nishioka last season and watching him struggle at both the plate and in the field.

Carroll hit .290 with 17 RBIs in 452 at-bats for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, playing both second base and shortstop. This is his fifth organization in 10 seasons. Carroll has a .991 career fielding percentage.
