Illinois State beats SIU-Edwardsville 68-38

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Jackie Carmichael scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Illinois State scored the game’s first 11 points and cruised to a 68-38 victory Thursday over SIU-Edwardsville in the Redbirds’ home opener, part of the Cancun Challenge.

Carmichael made the most of his 19 minutes on the court, shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 6 of 8 from the line. Jon Ekey added 12 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Redbirds (1-1), and Nic Moore scored 11.

Mark Yelovich led SIU-Edwardsville (0-2) with 18 points and five rebounds. The Cougars struggled overall, hitting just 26 percent of their shots and 42 percent of their free throws.

The Redbirds got layups by Carmichael, Anthony Cousin and Jordan Threloff, plus a dunk and a 3-pointer by John Wilkins, to lead 11-0 less than six minutes in. Illinois State led by at least seven the rest of the way.
