Survey shows Oregon food stamp use leads nation

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The share of Oregonians depending on food stamps leads the nation.

The Oregonian newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/uMNAmt ) that new Census data show that in 2010 food stamp use in Oregon surged, and nearly 18 percent of the state's residents used the aid at some time in the previous 12 months.

In a similar survey in 2009, six other states had rates equal to or higher than Oregon's.

The paper quotes human services officials as saying they're not surprised and that they're seeing more desperation in the families they serve.
