Valparaiso rallies late for 62-59 win over Akron

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Kevin Van Wijk had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Valparaiso scored the last eight points for a 62-59 victory against Akron in the 2K Sports Classic on Friday night.

Van Wijk’s layup cut the deficit to 59-56 with 3:18 remaining, and the Crusaders (3-1) scored their last six points on free throws. Jay Harris hit two shots from the foul line to give Valpo a 60-59 lead with 1:42 to go.

Meanwhile, the Zips (2-1) missed their last seven shots from the floor.

Harris scored 14 points, and Ryan Broekoff added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Demetrius Treadwell and Quincy Diggs had 13 points each for Akron, and Nick Harney added 11.
