Cal State Fullerton tops Louisiana-Lafayette 69-63

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — D.J. Sheeley scored.nine points in a decisive three-minute period of the second half as Cal State Fullerton (3-0) defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 69-63 Saturday in the second round of the Beryl Shipley Classic.

On a night when Isiah Umipig, who averaged 23.5 points in the Titan’s first two games, was blanked in the first half and scored six points, Sheeley and forward Orane Chin stepped up. Chin scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

But it was Sheeley, the guard who had five points in the first half, who helped the Titans overcome a 30-26 halftime deficit and beat the Ragin’ Cajuns (2-3). Although he was just 5 for 17 from the floor, four of Sheeley’s baskets were 3-pointers. With the score tied 52-52, he scored nine points within three minutes for a 63-54 lead.

Kadeem Coleby scored 14 points and J.J. Thomas 13 for Louisiana-Lafayette, which hit one 3-pointer.
