South Carolina State sinks Gardner-Webb 73-68

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Khalif Toombs scored 21 points, including making all six of his free throw attempts in the game’s final 20 seconds, leading South Carolina State in a 73-68 win over Gardner-Webb Saturday night.

Gardner-Webb pulled within 67-63 on two free throws by Jason Dawson with 22 seconds remaining, but Toombs took over from there. He was perfect at the line the rest of the way, and even contributed a steal with 11 seconds left to help close it out for South Carolina State (3-1).

South Carolina State led by two at halftime and outscored Gardner-Webb 43-40 in the second.

Aaron Martin added 16 points and Presano Bell had 15 for South Carolina State, which scored 13 points off 14 Gardner-Webb turnovers. South Carolina State also outscored Gardner-Webb 12-8 on second chance points despite being beaten 19-7 in bench scoring.

Max Landis led Gardner-Webb (2-2) with 18 points and Dawson added 12.
