Tacoma budget plan calls for 165 layoffs

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Tacoma’s interim city manager estimates 165 city employees will be laid off during expected budget cuts of about $23 million.

The News Tribune (http://bit.ly/sBuVqS ) says city officials fear they may need more budget cuts next year, as much as $31 million, and that could mean another 65 workers will be laid off.

Information about expected layoffs was sent to city employee unions. The letters spell out the expectations of 52 police jobs and 47 firefighter jobs going away.

In addition, 26.5 non-union city positions face layoffs and 68 now vacant city positions likely will be eliminated.
