Fire destroys rural Ore. post office

CASCADIA, Ore. (AP) -- A fire has destroyed the post office and another building in Cascadia, Ore.

The Democrat-Herald says (http://bit.ly/sG0Msm ) the fire started Saturday morning in a former school building that served as a home and business in the town 13 miles east of Sweet Home in the foothills of the Cascades. It spread to a trailer that housed both the post office and a small lending library.

Sweet Home Battalion Chief Shannon Pettner says one was injured.

The future of the post office is unclear. It is one of 3,200 rural post offices that are candidates for closure. Community members have been fighting to keep it open. Postmaster Ruth Powers says the post office for now will use the Cascadia Bible Church.
