SAN DIEGO (AP) — Defending America’s Cup champion Jimmy Spithill of Oracle Racing has sailed to victory in the fleet race finale of the third stop of the America’s Cup World Series on San Diego Bay.

Spithill, an Australian who lives part-time in San Diego, became the first skipper in the inaugural season of the ACWS to win both the match racing championship and the final fleet race. He won the match racing title on Saturday by sweeping two races from the French Energy Team.

Spithill’s winning move in Sunday’s fleet race came when he rounded the right-hand gate at the end of the third leg and sailed into clean air with no traffic around him.
