SEATTLE (AP) — The governor’s plan for balancing the state budget in the face of a lingering recession has definitely got people talking. Among the most heat-generating ideas are education cuts.
Some who hate the idea of more education cuts are happy to hear the governor talking about raising taxes.
If Gov. Chris Gregoire’s proposal for a temporary sales tax increase is approved, she says other ideas including cutting the school year by four days and taking more money from higher education could be off the table.
The president of the state’s largest teacher’s union says she appreciates that the governor has raised the issue of revenue. Washington Education Association President Mary Lindquist says she thinks all revenue options should be open for discussion because the state’s education system just can’t take any more cuts.
