SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Spokesman-Review of Spokane is reporting that quick work by law enforcement officers prevented the bomb planted at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade from being detonated last January.
The newspaper, citing an unnamed federal source, says the quick decision by police to change the parade route after the bomb was discovered prevented the detonation.
The source told the newspaper that the route change kept bomber Kevin Harpham — who was marching in the parade — from getting close enough to his bomb to detonate it with a remote car starter.
Harpham pleaded guilty in the case and faces 27 to 32 years in prison when he is sentenced next Wednesday.
