VCU pulls away from Western Kentucky 68-45

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Bradford Burgess scored 16 points as Virginia Commonwealth broke open a close game in the second half and defeated Western Kentucky 68-45 on Wednesday night.

VCU led 31-27 at halftime, but shot 64 percent (16 of 25) from the field in the second half to put the game away. The Rams (3-2) built a 24-point lead with 1:51 to play.

Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers (1-5) had trouble making shots in the final 20 minutes. Western Kentucky shot only 35 percent (7 of 20) in the second half and went the final 3:57 of the game without a field goal.

VCU’s defense also was effective, getting 28 points off 22 Hilltopper turnovers.

Briante Weber added 13 points, and Darius Theus and Rob Brandenburg each had 12 for the Rams.

Derrick Gordon scored 12 points to lead the Hilltoppers, who have lost four in a row.
