EVERETT, Wash. – (AP) — A grocery store security guard in Everett has been fired after he detained a 4-year-old shoplifter and told the girl’s father she would face criminal charges.

The child’s father took her to a Safeway store recently. Her mother, Alissa Jones, says when the father wasn’t looking the girl grabbed a dried fruit package from a shelf and ate a few pieces. She then put the package back on the shelf. A guard saw this and took the little girl and her dad to a room and said the girl would face charges and be banned from the Safeway chain. Jones says the guard made the girl sign a piece of paper acknowledging she wasn’t allowed to enter any Safeways.

Safeway spokesperson Cherie Myers say the company was “appalled” by the guard’s actions and have dismissed him. Store officials have apologized to the girl’s parents.
