KEIZER, Ore. (AP) -- A family of eight escaped their burning house early Monday in Keizer, but they have been left homeless by the two-alarm fire.
The Keizer Fire District says the homeowners smelled smoke and discovered the fire as smoke detectors went off. They called 911 and dispatchers told them to evacuate immediately.
The mother, father and six children -- ages 7 months to 18 years -- are OK.
The fire consumed the garage and spread to the second floor attic of the house. The fire went to a second alarm, which brought help from Salem and Marion County firefighters.
Keizer Fire Chief Jeff Cowan says firefighters worked under fire as some ammunition in the garage exploded.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not considered suspicious.
